What is a creative director in fashion? The job, the public pay data and recent moves
A creative director sets a fashion house's direction across clothes, campaigns and beauty. Rabanne's July 2026 release shows the scope; no house publishes the pay.

A creative director in fashion is the person who sets the look and direction of a house: the collections, the campaigns, and increasingly the products beyond clothing. The title is not standardized, and houses use "artistic director" and "creative director" for the same job, but two recent appointments show what the role covers and how it is announced. This explainer uses those announcements, the US government's closest pay data and the latest Paris season to answer what the job is, what it pays, and who holds it now.
What the job covers, from a real announcement
The clearest definition is in a company's own words. On July 14, 2026, Rabanne, which belongs to the Spanish group Puig, announced Olivier Rousteing as creative director. The release says that under his direction the house "will continue to expand its universe through new product categories, further shaping a comprehensive ecosystem where fashion, beauty and innovation exist in constant dialogue." That is the modern scope: clothes, yes, but also the brand's identity across fragrance and beauty, which is where, Luxury Tribune says, the brand is best known. Luxury Tribune notes Rabanne was the first Puig brand to exceed one billion euros in turnover, in 2023, driven by fragrances such as 1 Million and Lady Million, while fashion is a much smaller part of the business.
The release also shows the timeline. Rousteing's first show for Rabanne will take place in March 2027, about eight months after the announcement. A new director typically needs a full season to develop a first collection, so the gap between a hire and a debut is itself part of the job description.
How a handover looks
A second example is Courrèges. According to V Magazine's report of March 31, 2026, the house appointed Drew Henry as creative director after Nicolas Di Felice's five-year tenure, effective May 2026, with a debut during Paris Fashion Week in September. Henry trained at Central Saint Martins, graduating in 2014, and worked at Céline, JW Anderson and Burberry, the report says. He described his interest in clothing that feels "modern, useful, and direct."
The debut happened as scheduled. W Magazine's recap of Paris Fashion Week, which ran September 28 to October 6, 2026, says Henry staged his collection around 450 mismatched chairs at the Palais de Tokyo. Our own review of that show is here. The sequence, an announcement, a start date, and a runway test within about six months, is a typical shape for a handover, though schedules vary by house.
“Olivier Rousteing's creative vision is bold, magnetic, and deeply connected to the energy of today.”
The house history matters to the brief, too. V Magazine notes Courrèges was founded in 1961 by André and Coqueline Courrèges and built its identity on a forward-looking idea of modernity. A new director inherits that archive and is judged on how it is reinterpreted. Henry's stated interest in clothing that is "modern, useful, and direct" is a way of reading that heritage, not a break from it. In practice, the first show is both a creative statement and a signal to the owner and to retailers about where the house is heading.

What a creative director pays
Neither house publishes what its creative director earns, and we found no public source for it. The nearest official figure is for art directors in general. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of $114,850 a year in May 2025 for the occupation, which it describes as responsible for "the visual style and images in magazines, newspapers, product packaging" and similar media, with about 140,200 jobs in 2025 and 4% projected growth from 2025 to 2035. BLS says the job usually requires a bachelor's degree and five or more years in a related occupation such as design, photography or editing.
That figure is not a fashion creative director salary. The people who run luxury houses are a few dozen individuals on negotiated contracts, and any number quoted for them in a headline is an estimate unless the house or a regulator filing states it. For the pay of the designers who work under them, see our piece on what fashion designers make.
Who is in the job now
The Paris spring 2027 season, September 28 to October 6, 2026, gives a snapshot. W Magazine's recap mentions Jonathan Anderson showing at Dior, Matthieu Blazy's lineup at Chanel, Nicolas Ghesquière at Louis Vuitton, Michael Rider at Celine and Drew Henry at Courrèges. It also notes that Anthony Vaccarello's Saint Laurent show was "widely read as a possible farewell," and that Chemena Kamali's Chloé show came amid rumors she could move to Saint Laurent. W says neither is confirmed, and we have found no official announcement from either house, so treat both as unverified.
Moves are frequent enough that a tracker is the right tool, not an article. We keep this explainer to the definition and will not list a roster we cannot source to each house's own announcement.
Hype check
The claim: a creative director is the genius behind a house. The evidence: announcements describe a role that spans collections, beauty and new product categories, and houses are owned by groups such as Puig that set commercial targets. The creative director leads the studio; the group sets the business. The role is real and public-facing, but it sits inside a corporate structure, and the first-show date is the only commitment a new hire publicly makes.
Our take
Read a creative director appointment as a two-part announcement: who will set the look, and what the group wants the house to sell. The Rabanne release is explicit about the second. When you hear a salary number for a named director, ask for the source; there is no public one. And treat rumors of moves, including those around Saint Laurent and Chloé this season, as just that until a house issues a statement.
