Fashion designer jobs are flat through 2035 at a median $80,960, while buyer roles are growing 6%. The Bureau of Labor Statistics tables, read in October 2026.

Fashion industry jobs cover far more than design. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publishes pay, headcount and ten year growth for the occupations around fashion, and the numbers disagree with the glamorous version. Designers are a small, flat field. Buyers are a bigger one that is growing. This piece reads the BLS tables as published in its Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified August 27, 2026, with pay data from May 2025. It quotes no individual, because the evidence here is the tables.

Fashion designers: well paid, few jobs

The BLS puts median pay for fashion designers at $80,960 a year ($38.92 an hour) in May 2025. The lowest 10% earned less than $39,490 and the highest 10% more than $146,870. For comparison, the median for all occupations was $50,980.

Headcount is small. About 32,700 people held the job in 2025, and the BLS projects about 32,800 in 2035, a change of roughly 0% that it labels "little or no change." Even so, about 2,500 openings a year are projected, mostly from people leaving the occupation. A bachelor's degree is the typical entry requirement, and no related work experience or on the job training is typically required.

Our separate piece on how much fashion designers make goes deeper on the pay distribution.

Where the designer is employed matters more than the title

The BLS lists median pay by industry for designers in May 2025: management of companies and enterprises $105,350, apparel and piece goods wholesalers $91,020, apparel manufacturing $79,040 and retail trade $43,020. A designer inside a company's headquarters earns more than twice what one working in retail does.

That spread is the single most useful fact for a student. A job called designer can sit at a brand's head office or behind a store counter, and these tables suggest the difference is worth about $62,000 a year at the median. The BLS table does not say why, and it does not say how many designers sit in each industry, so we would not read a causal story into it.

Buyers and purchasing agents: a bigger, growing field

Buyers decide what a store or wholesaler stocks. The BLS groups them with purchasing agents, so these figures cover all industries, not only fashion. Median pay was $77,710 in May 2025, with the lowest 10% under $48,380 and the highest 10% over $128,870. Employment was about 516,100 in 2025, and the BLS projects 6% growth to 2035, about 30,800 jobs, faster than average.

Industry splits for buyers: a median of $71,640 in wholesale trade and $57,840 in retail trade. Wholesale employs 14% of all buyers and retail 7%. Buyers and purchasing agents typically receive a few months of on the job training, per the BLS, though the broader purchasing group typically needs a bachelor's degree. Art directors: the top of the creative pay scale

Art directors set the visual style of campaigns, publications and products. The BLS median for them was $114,850 in May 2025, with 140,200 jobs in 2025 and 4% projected growth to 2035, about 5,900 more jobs. A bachelor's degree is typical and the BLS lists five years or more of related experience. This is not an entry level job, and it is not fashion specific, since the BLS counts art directors across publishing, advertising and other industries.

Graphic designers: shrinking

Graphic designers, who produce much of the digital and print work a fashion brand needs, had a median of $62,960 and 253,100 jobs in 2025. The BLS projects a 2% decline, about 4,200 fewer jobs, by 2035. A bachelor's degree is typical.

How to read the pay numbers

Set each median against the $50,980 all occupations median. By our arithmetic, designers earn about 59% more, buyers and purchasing agents about 52% more and art directors about 125% more. The designers' 2,500 yearly openings are about 7.6% of the 32,700 existing jobs, which means the field turns over, but it does not expand.

Other jobs in the neighborhood

The designers page lists related occupations with their May 2025 medians: industrial designers $83,910, jewelers and precious stone and metal workers $52,540, models $48,470 and floral designers $37,360. Models require no formal educational credential. We did not open the individual pages for those occupations, so we cannot give headcounts or growth for them here.

What the BLS data leaves out

First, the BLS counts jobs, not careers. It says nothing about how many people want these jobs or how hard they are to get. Second, a category such as buyers and purchasing agents holds many industries, so it is a ceiling for fashion buying, not a count of it. Third, projections are a modeled estimate, not a promise. Fourth, the tables tell you nothing about the creative director roles that make headlines; those are a handful of jobs, and our explainer on what a creative director does separates them from the tables.

Our take

If you want a job in fashion for the income, the data favors buying and art direction over design, and company headquarters over retail floors. If you want to design, go in knowing the occupation is flat at about 32,700 jobs and most openings come from people leaving. Skip any career guide that quotes a salary without a year and an employer type. Watch the BLS page each autumn for the new May figures.
