Best time to buy luxury bags: price increases by house, dated, and what the hikes cost

Hermès, Chanel and Louis Vuitton each raise prices on their own calendar. We dated the latest rounds, converted them to percentages and checked the claim that you should buy before the hike.

There is no single best month to buy a luxury bag, because each house raises prices on its own calendar. Hermès has historically moved once a year, usually in January. Chanel changed prices in August 2025, November 2025 and April 2026. Louis Vuitton raised U.S. handbag prices on May 27, 2026. The reported jumps run from about 3% to 9%, so timing a purchase saves little.

The price calendar, house by house

Here is what we could date, as of October 15, 2026. Most of the price figures come from resale and preowned retailers that track boutique tags, not from the houses, because we found no price history published by the houses themselves. We flag each one as the retailer's reading.

  • Hermès: the finance chief, Eric du Halgouët, said in April 2025 that the house had already raised prices worldwide by "6 to 7 percent" at the start of that year and that it usually raises them once a year, according to FashionUnited. He added a separate U.S. increase from May 1, 2025 to offset a 10 percent tariff, and gave no figure. Miloura's January 26, 2026 report puts the 2026 round at January 1 in Europe, with most core bags up mid to high single digits.
  • Chanel: Miloura's April 9, 2026 report says the Classic Flap line last moved in August 2025, the Chanel 25 in November 2025, and a new round took effect April 2, 2026.
  • Louis Vuitton: Fashionphile, in a post dated May 29, 2026, reports a handbag-only increase after two U.S. rounds in 2025.

We found no published notice from any of the three about a change after October 15, 2026. Hermès does not pre-announce price changes, according to Miloura, and we do not predict them.

What each hike actually cost

A percentage is easier to weigh than a headline. Fashionphile and Collector's Cage supply the Louis Vuitton figures, and Miloura supplies the rest.

  • Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandoulière 30: up 3% in the May 2026 round per Fashionphile, and listed at $2,040 in Collector's Cage's July 2026 guide.
  • Louis Vuitton Low Key Cabas MM: $4,400 to $4,650, the largest handbag move at 5.7%, per Fashionphile.
  • Chanel Classic Flap and 2.55 Reissue: about $400 in the U.S. from April 2, 2026, just under 4%, with the Classic Flap at $11,700 afterward, per Miloura.
  • Hermès Birkin 35 in the U.S.: $15,100 to $16,300 in January 2026, about 7.9%, per Miloura.
  • Hermès Kelly 25 in the U.S.: $12,600 to $13,700, about 8.7%, per Miloura.

On a bag near $2,000, a 3% rise is about $60. On a $16,300 Birkin it is $1,200, but only for a buyer who is actually offered the bag. Miloura notes that long-term clients are favored for Birkin and Kelly offers, so a Birkin is not something most people can time. None of our sources describes the Louis Vuitton or Chanel bags above as allocation items, so those are easier to time.

What the company numbers say about why prices move

Hermès reported on July 29, 2026 that first-half revenue was €8.2 billion, up 6% at constant exchange rates and 2% at current rates. Leather goods and saddlery grew 10%, and the Americas grew 15%. The release does not split growth into price and volume, so we cannot say how much of that growth came from price. It does show demand holding at the house with the steadiest annual increases. For the background on why these bags are priced as they are, see our explainer on why Birkin bags cost so much.

“It will be a supplementary price increase that we are currently finalising, but it will enable us to neutralise this impact”

Eric du Halgouët, CFO of Hermès, as quoted in FashionUnited (translated), April 17, 2025

LVMH reported on October 12, 2026 that fashion and leather goods revenue, which includes Louis Vuitton, fell 5% organically in the third quarter and 2% in the first nine months, to €26,391 million. The group said the division "continued to benefit from the buoyant US market" but was hit by slower demand in China. Louis Vuitton raised U.S. prices on May 27, within the period LVMH described as buoyant in the U.S. We cover the quarter in our LVMH Q3 breakdown. The filings do not tie any price decision to any sales figure, and we are not drawing that line.

The hype check on "buy before the hike"

The claim is common in resale and guide content: buy now, because prices only go up. It is partly true and mostly incomplete.

The true part is that retail prices at these houses have not gone backward in anything we found. Miloura's own wording is that "retail prices rarely go backwards." The incomplete part is the size. The 2026 rounds we could date were roughly 3% for the Speedy, just under 4% for the Chanel Classic Flap and under 9% for the quota Hermès bags in Miloura's examples. A tax difference can be larger. Collector's Cage, a preloved retailer, says European prices are lower than U.S. prices on the Speedy 30 (€1,650 versus $2,040 in its July 2026 guide), before VAT refunds and currency. That gap is a different decision from timing a hike.

There is also a seller's interest. Fashionphile's post says a Speedy Bandoulière 30 bought in 2022 for $1,640 is now worth $2,040, a 24.4% gain in four years. That figure is the 2026 retail tag read back against a 2022 tag, from a company that sells and buys these bags, and it is not a resale price paid by any buyer. We report it as the seller's claim and do not treat it as a return.

How to read an announcement, without a forecast

Three habits keep the claim in proportion.

First, check the source of any "hike coming" post. Miloura's January report describes forum rumors of double-digit increases as speculation until boutique prices change, and a pre-hike rumor has no document behind it.

Second, check which bag moved. Fashionphile's May 29 list shows different percentages by style, and Miloura says Chanel treated materials differently, with raffia and denim under 2% while suede calfskin neared 5%.

Third, check the market. A U.S. price rise and a European one are separate events, and Miloura reports Chanel's U.S. adjustment ranged 2% to 5% in April 2026 while Europe ran 2% to 4%.

For anyone treating a bag as an asset, none of the figures here is a return, and we offer no prediction. Our position: the date of the next hike is not knowable from public documents, so a price read on the day of purchase, from the house's own page, is the only number worth building a decision on.

Where the sources fall short

All three houses keep their price lists private beyond the boutique and website, and our price points come from retailers that benefit when a reader feels urgency. The primary documents we opened, the Hermès half-year release and the LVMH nine-month release, cover sales, not tags. If a house publishes a dated price notice, we will update this page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to buy luxury bags?

There is no single best month. Hermès has historically raised prices once a year, usually in January. Chanel changed prices in August 2025, November 2025 and April 2026, and Louis Vuitton raised U.S. handbag prices on May 27, 2026. The 2026 rounds we dated ranged from about 3% to 9%, so the savings from timing are modest.

When does Hermès raise prices?

Hermès finance chief Eric du Halgouët said in April 2025 that the house usually raises prices once a year. Miloura reported the 2026 round effective January 1 in Europe, with most core bags up mid to high single digits. Hermès also added a separate U.S. increase from May 1, 2025 to offset a tariff.

How much did Chanel raise prices in 2026?

Miloura reported a round effective April 2, 2026: about $400 on the Classic Flap and 2.55 Reissue in the U.S., just under 4%, with the Classic Flap at $11,700. It put U.S. increases at 2% to 5% and European ones at 2% to 4%. Chanel had changed the Classic Flap line in August 2025.

When did Louis Vuitton last raise prices?

Fashionphile reported a handbag-only U.S. increase on May 27, 2026, after two U.S. rounds in 2025. Hikes ranged from 2.1% to 5.7%, with the Low Key Cabas MM rising from $4,400 to $4,650. Collector's Cage says the house typically adjusts one to two times a year.

Should I buy a luxury bag before a price increase?

We do not give buying advice. The documented savings are modest: about 3% on a Speedy, just under 4% on a Chanel Classic Flap, and 7.9% to 8.7% on two U.S. Hermès bags. Hermès does not pre-announce changes, per Miloura, and a rumor has no document behind it.

Do luxury bags hold their value after a price increase?

Our sources do not show it. Fashionphile's claim that a $1,640 Speedy from 2022 is now worth $2,040 compares retail tags and comes from a company that buys and sells these bags. Miloura says resale prices do not always rise at the same pace as retail.
