What is fashion week? Who sets the schedule, who gets in, and what happens next

Fashion week is a trade calendar, not one event: four councils set their own schedules, most shows are by invitation, and the selling happens in showrooms afterward.

Published automatically under our verification gates, without a person reading it first. A named byline on this site means someone did.

Fashion week is a scheduled run of runway shows and presentations in one city, where designers show next season's clothes to the buyers and press who decide what gets stocked and written about. There are four main ones, New York, London, Milan and Paris, each held twice a year for womenswear. The part most explainers skip is who actually runs each one, because the answer is not the same in any two cities.

Who sets the schedule

Nobody owns "fashion week" as a single thing. Each city has a trade body that controls its calendar, and a brand's slot depends on that body's rules.

In New York, the Council of Fashion Designers of America runs the official schedule. Its own April 2026 notice says "The CFDA Fashion Calendar invites designers to apply for inclusion on the Official New York Fashion Week Schedule for the September 2026 season." Applications closed May 20, 2026, and the week itself ran September 10 to 15, 2026.

London's schedule belongs to the British Fashion Council. Its London Fashion Week page lists the September 2026 edition as Thursday, September 17 to Monday, September 21, and points designers to a separate application form. The BFC also runs the NEWGEN program that backs emerging labels.

Milan is run by the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana. Its site says it is the exclusive owner of the Milano Fashion Week trademark and lists spring/summer 2027 women's shows for September 22 to 28, 2026, with the next women's edition set for February 23 to March 1, 2027.

Paris is run by the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, usually shortened to FHCM. Its official page gives the womenswear spring/summer 2027 season as September 28 to October 6, 2026, which is nine days, the longest of the four this autumn.

Who gets a slot

The rules differ, and Paris is the clearest. The FHCM calendar is built from federation members plus invited guest houses. According to FashionUnited, member houses are automatically on the schedule, while guest brands apply with a portfolio three or four months ahead and a committee of journalists, buyers and industry professionals decides. The FHCM's own page says guests are chosen after applications are examined, weighing creative potential and international reach.

New York and London also run applications. The CFDA page we read lists no application fee and no other eligibility rules, so we cannot say what makes one designer get in over another.

A slot on an official schedule is not the same as a show. Plenty of brands stage events on the margins, outside the council calendars. They get attention, but not the council's listing, press list or buyer traffic.

Who attends

Fashion week is mainly a trade event. Buyers from department stores and boutiques come to choose what to stock. Editors and critics come to review. Stylists, celebrities and influencers fill the front rows, and those images are what the public sees.

Access is mostly by invitation. The CNMI site says Milan Fashion Week events are by invitation only. The FHCM routes buyers and press to separate contacts, and its Paris showroom event runs at the Palais de Tokyo from September 30 to October 6, 2026, with a digital version by invitation.

London is the most open. The BFC says its digital hub is freely accessible to everyone, industry professionals and consumers alike. That is a website, not a seat at a show. We did not find a current statement from the BFC on public tickets to live shows, so we do not claim one.

What a show costs

No council publishes a standard price for a runway show, and we found no figure from a reputable, dated source that we could verify to a named estimator, so we are not printing one. Costs vary with venue, casting, production and crew, and brands rarely disclose them.

One dated data point exists, and it is about support, not price. FashionUnited reported in January 2026 that French brands can get up to 15,000 euros toward a show and 6,000 euros toward a presentation through the Défi de la Mode fund, subject to eligibility. Treat that as a cap on aid, not what a show costs.

What happens after the shows

The runway is the marketing. The selling usually happens afterward, in showrooms, by appointment. Paris runs an official showroom session alongside its shows, which is why the FHCM page lists a contact address for buyers. Buyers move between appointments, review the line and write orders for the season ahead.

That is why the "see now, buy now" idea, where a collection goes on sale straight after the show, never replaced the old system for most labels. Glossy reported in September 2017 that for Rebecca Minkoff, wholesale partners accounted for about 85 percent of sales, and under its plan buyers saw collections "in private showings months ahead from when the collection would then be seen on the runway." The same report quotes a Kate Spade executive saying "we realized we didn't need the lift of fashion week to drive traffic." Some brands with their own stores can sell immediately. Brands that depend on wholesale still need buyers to order well before shoppers see anything.

In-season drops are a related shortcut: pieces released between the big weeks. The details differ by label, and we found no council data on how common they are.

For the other formats, see our guide to haute couture, which runs on a separate Paris calendar. The FHCM page lists couture spring/summer 2027 for January 25 to 28, 2027, with a submission deadline of November 2, 2026. For upcoming dates across all four cities, see the 2027 fashion week calendar.

Our take

Fashion week looks like a public spectacle, but it is a trade calendar owned by four industry bodies, and each one decides who is on it. The glamour is real, yet the business is in the showroom appointments that follow. If you want the news, watch the council schedules. If you want what will be in stores, watch what buyers order, and expect that to stay mostly private.

Frequently asked questions

What is fashion week?

Fashion week is a scheduled run of runway shows and presentations in one city, where designers show next season's collections to buyers and press. The four main ones are New York, London, Milan and Paris, each set by its own council.

Who sets the New York Fashion Week schedule?

The CFDA runs the Official New York Fashion Week Schedule. For September 2026 it accepted designer applications until May 20, 2026, and the week ran September 10 to 15.

Who decides which brands show at Paris Fashion Week?

The FHCM. Member houses are on the schedule automatically, and guest brands apply with a portfolio and are chosen by a committee, per FashionUnited. The FHCM says it weighs creative potential and international reach.

Can the public go to fashion week?

Mostly not. Milan's CNMI says its events are by invitation only, and Paris routes buyers and press through set contacts. London's BFC digital hub is open to everyone, but that is a website, not a show seat.

How much does a fashion week show cost?

No council publishes a standard figure, and we did not find a verifiable one, so we do not print a number. One dated data point is aid: FashionUnited reported in January 2026 that French brands can get up to 15,000 euros for a show through Défi de la Mode.

What happens after a fashion week show?

Selling usually happens in showrooms by appointment, where buyers place orders for the season ahead. See now, buy now, selling straight from the runway, stayed a niche for brands that depend on wholesale.
