Japanese streetwear began in Tokyo's Ura-Harajuku backstreets in the early 1990s. Today BAPE is co-controlled by CVC, Human Made is listed in Tokyo and has agreed in principle to buy Undercover, and visvim publishes itself.

Japanese streetwear is the clothing scene that grew out of the Ura-Harajuku backstreets of Tokyo in the early 1990s, led by Hiroshi Fujiwara's GoodEnough, then Nigo's A Bathing Ape, Jun Takahashi's Undercover and Shinsuke Takizawa's Neighborhood. In 2026 its ownership is split: BAPE sits with private equity, Human Made is a listed company, and visvim still publishes itself.

Where it started: Ura-Harajuku

Ura-Harajuku, shortened to Urahara, is the web of back streets behind Harajuku's main drag, around Cat Street between Omotesando and Shibuya. According to Yokogao Magazine, Hiroshi Fujiwara arrived in Tokyo in 1981 and launched GoodEnough in 1990. The same piece says Nigo and Jun Takahashi opened the NOWHERE store in Ura-Harajuku in 1993, and that Shinsuke Takizawa launched Neighborhood in 1994. Fujiwara is described there as the mentor of all three.

The dates matter because the scene is often told as a single moment. It was a decade of small shops, a column in a magazine and word of mouth. If you want the wider map of who sits where today, our guide to contemporary streetwear brands and who owns them covers the Western side. This piece stays on Tokyo.

The labels and who controls them now

Here is the short version, as read from the sources below on October 15, 2026.

  • A Bathing Ape (BAPE): founded in Harajuku in 1993. Co-controlled by CVC Capital Partners and the founders of I.T Limited since June 3, 2021.
  • Undercover: founded by Jun Takahashi in 1990. Human Made's board approved a non-binding letter of intent on June 15, 2026 to acquire all of its shares.
  • Human Made: Nigo's label, founded in 2010. Listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Growth market on November 27, 2025.
  • Neighborhood: founded in 1994 in Harajuku, per its own site. Neighborhood Co., Ltd. is named in the copyright line of both its site and the WTAPS site.
  • visvim: its site is published by Cubism Inc., which sells six brands through one web store. We found no reported outside investor.

BAPE: from founder to private equity

BAPE is the clearest example of a Japanese streetwear label that changed hands. Wikipedia records that on February 1, 2011, A Bathing Ape was announced as sold to Hong Kong group I.T, which bought a 90.27% stake for about US$2.8 million.

The second change came in 2021. In its June 3, 2021 release, CVC said it had acquired co-control of BAPE after I.T Limited was taken private on April 30, 2021. The release names the labels A Bathing Ape, AAPE, Baby Milo, BAPE Black and Mr. Bathing Ape, and lists China, the United States and Europe as growth markets. CVC did not publish a stake size in that release, so we do not give one.

“BAPE is an iconic brand with a loyal fan base that has defined the fashion industry with its premium streetwear designs.”

Yann Jiang, Director at CVC, CVC press release, June 3, 2021

One legal footnote belongs to the sneaker side. Nike sued over BAPE footwear in January 2023, and according to The Fashion Law the parties filed a joint dismissal with prejudice, reported April 30, 2024. Nike said BAPE agreed to stop selling some of the shoes and redesign others. Terms were not disclosed.

Human Made and Undercover: the live deal

The biggest ownership story in the scene is also the newest. Human Made, which Nigo founded in 2010, said in June 2026 that its board had approved a non-binding letter of intent to buy Undercover, according to FashionNetwork, published June 16, 2026. Price and terms were not disclosed, and the share price is to be set after an independent valuation. A share purchase agreement was expected in September and the transfer in February 2027.

As of October 15, 2026 we found no report that the September agreement was signed. Treat the deal as announced, not done.

The buyer is a real business. In its fiscal year 2026 results filing dated March 16, 2026, Human Made reported net sales of 14,273 million yen, up 26.8%, and operating income of 4,531 million yen, for the year ended January 31, 2026. Its first forecast for the year ending January 2027 was 18,500 million yen in sales. A Quartr summary dated September 11, 2026 says that forecast was later raised to 19.2 billion yen. Treat that second figure as a secondary read until you check the company's own release.

The independents still on their own

Neighborhood's official site, read October 15, 2026, lists its 2026 autumn winter line, including a leather Dad jacket at 99,000 yen and a washed denim engineer jacket at 52,800 yen. WTAPS lists a 2026 autumn and winter release dated October 16, 2026, and its shopping guide says delivery is to addresses in Japan only.

Visvim's own site shows a different model. It describes its web store as stocking six brands: visvim, WMV, Indigo Camping Trailer, little cloud coffee, CONTRARY DEPT and Subsequence. WWD Japan's visvim page lists a 25th anniversary event on August 27, 2025 and a Kobe store opening on December 2, 2024. None of those pages reports an outside investor, and that absence is a finding, not proof.

What the usual lists miss

The top results for this query list the same founders and shark hoodies, and the ones we opened say little about who owns what now. The picture as of October 2026 is uneven: one private equity co-owned brand, one listed company about to absorb its friend's label, and several founder-run houses whose ownership shows up mostly in a site footer. Our primer, what is streetwear, covers the Western definition.

Our take

Skip any list that calls these brands "independent" without checking. The origin story is settled: GoodEnough in 1990, NOWHERE in 1993, Neighborhood in 1994. The business story is not. Watch two things: whether the Human Made and Undercover agreement is signed, and whether CVC discloses anything more about BAPE.

Frequently asked questions

What is Japanese streetwear?

It is the clothing scene that grew out of Tokyo's Ura-Harajuku backstreets in the early 1990s. Hiroshi Fujiwara launched GoodEnough in 1990, Nigo and Jun Takahashi opened NOWHERE in 1993 and Shinsuke Takizawa launched Neighborhood in 1994, per Yokogao Magazine. What is Ura-Harajuku?

Ura-Harajuku, or Urahara, is the group of back streets behind Harajuku's main drag, centered on Cat Street between Omotesando and Shibuya. Vintage shops, galleries and small boutiques there became the base for GoodEnough, NOWHERE and Neighborhood in the 1990s.

Who owns A Bathing Ape (BAPE) now?

CVC Capital Partners announced co-control of BAPE on June 3, 2021, alongside the founders of I.T Limited, after I.T was taken private on April 30, 2021. I.T had bought about 90% of BAPE in 2011. CVC did not publish a stake size in its release, and we found no reported change since.

Is Undercover being acquired?

Human Made's board approved a non-binding letter of intent on June 15, 2026 to acquire all of Undercover's shares. Price was not disclosed. A share purchase agreement was expected in September 2026 and transfer in February 2027. As of October 15, 2026 we found no report that it had been signed.

Is Human Made a public company?

Yes. Human Made listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Growth market on November 27, 2025, per its results filing. For the year ended January 31, 2026 it reported net sales of 14,273 million yen and operating income of 4,531 million yen.

Are visvim, WTAPS and Neighborhood owned by big groups?

We found no reported outside investor in visvim, whose site is published by Cubism Inc. Neighborhood's and WTAPS's official sites both carry a Neighborhood Co., Ltd. copyright footer. That shows a corporate link, not the terms of it, so we do not describe any deal.
