Fall 2026 fashion trends: wardrobe dressing, faux fur and the skirt suit, with the houses credited
By Zain·
The fall 2026 shows, held in February and March 2026, favored real clothes over styled looks. Fur, trains and skirt suits recur across houses, and we name who showed what, with dates.
The fall 2026 shows, held in New York, London, Milan and Paris in February and March 2026, did not produce one dominant silhouette. They produced a set of repeats: real clothes over styled looks, fur and faux fur, tailoring, trains, and color that clashes on purpose. We read two season roundups, W's of April 3, 2026 and Coveteur's of March 20, 2026, and one Milan show report, and credit each house to the page that credited it.
Wardrobe dressing: real clothes, not looks
W's April 3, 2026 roundup, "The 14 Top Trends From the Fall 2026 Runways," opens with what it calls "wardrobe dressing." It writes that "The look is less about fully styled, head-to-toe fashion, and more about key items that can be mixed into your closet," and names Celine, Loro Piana, Ralph Lauren and Alaia, with Prada also in the group. For Alaia, W says Pieter Mulier stressed that his goal for his final collection was to "create real clothes."
W sets Chanel, Tom Ford under Haider Ackermann and Celine under Michael Rider against that idea in a separate trend it calls the full look: outfits "meant to be worn and styled together." So the season ran both directions, and the headline claim that everyone dressed down is not supported.
Prada is the clearest example of the key-piece mood. AFP reported that Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons showed 15 models and 60 outfits at the Fondazione Prada in Milan, each model walking more than once and removing a garment. The show notes spoke of "mutations from within, visible to the exterior." Numero's report dates the show to February 26, 2026 and describes "only fifteen models on the catwalk for sixty silhouettes." Simons told AFP, "It's a lot about the feel, to kind of be inspired."
Fur and faux fur, named by house
Fur is the repeat with the most overlap. W's "Think (Faux) Mink" trend says "Minklike outerwear was everywhere this season: Gucci's faux-fur coats were weightless in person," and credits shearling coats at Valentino, Phoebe Philo and Toteme that looked refined enough to pass for mink. It also notes that The Row offered a real shaved mink coat, a reminder that not every house made the same choice.
Coveteur's "Statement Fur" credits Gucci for "belted fur coats," Chanel under Matthieu Blazy for "multicolored versions," Schiaparelli under Daniel Roseberry for "fur pants into looks," and Valentino under Alessandro Michele, whose coats it says "looked as though they were plucked out of an heirloom closet." It calls the Valentino presentation one that took place in Rome. Its "Tactile Texture" section adds shearling and pile at Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Diotima.
“mutations from within, visible to the exterior”
Neither source states whether any fur was real unless it says so, and we are not extending their wording. Check each house's own materials for composition before treating any coat as faux.

The skirt suit and sharper tailoring
Coveteur's "The New Suit" credits a lapel-less purple skirt suit at Jil Sander on an orange runway, deconstructed tailoring from Maximillian Davis at Ferragamo, Tom Ford under Haider Ackermann with "the suede skirt suit in poppy red and ecru," and Chanel under Blazy, who it says emphasized the core house silhouette.
W's "The Women of Wall Street" lists sharply tailored dark suits at Saint Laurent, Gucci and Tom Ford, and writes that "Following multiple seasons of oversize menswear silhouettes, this season brought a slimmer fit." Two outlets agreeing on Tom Ford is the strongest tailoring signal in these sources. Other houses appear in only one.
Trains, florals and dark romance
Coveteur's "Long Exit" trend covers trains: silk shirts at Kallmeyer with "bias-cut fabric trailing from the hips," layered tutu skirts with frothy trains at Dior under Jonathan Anderson, trains secured to knitted minis at Loewe, and a translucent organza train on a little black dress at McQueen.
It also lists oversized floral appliques at Khaite, Simone Rocha, Dior and Chanel, and a dark romance thread at Saint Laurent under Anthony Vaccarello, Ann Demeulemeester under Stefano Gallici and McQueen under Sean McGirr. Some designers named here, including Anthony Vaccarello, Sean McGirr and Pieter Mulier, have since left or announced exits from their houses, as our creative director changes tracker records, so the house-and-director pairings describe fall 2026 only.
“The look is less about fully styled, head-to-toe fashion, and more about key items that can be mixed into your closet”
Color clash and the thrifty mix
W's "Color Clash" credits Loewe, Akris, Prada with forest green and silver, and Louis Vuitton with pink and orange, taupe hats and yellow pumps. Its "The Thrifty Mix" credits Meryll Rogge at Marni and Conner Ives, with W saying pieces were "sourced directly from London charity shops." Its Valentino entry in "Princess and the Pink" ties a lavender and pale pink lace gown to the 20th anniversary of Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette.
What the two roundups disagree on
They count differently. W has 14 trends, Coveteur has eight. W gives plaid and tartan no slot; Coveteur's "Checked Out" credits Chloe under Chemena Kamali, Acne Studios and Burberry under Daniel Lee. W has animal print at Balmain and an indie sleaze thread at 7 For All Mankind and Marc Jacobs, neither of which appears in Coveteur's eight. A trend that only one outlet lists is a taste call. A trend both list, namely fur and the suit, is the better bet.
How this relates to spring 2027
This page covers fall 2026 only. The shows held in September and October 2026 for spring 2027 are covered in our piece on what Paris established for spring 2027.
Our take
Buy the overlap and ignore the rest. A good coat in faux fur or shearling, or a skirt suit that is tailored well, shows up in both roundups across several houses. Dated runway ideas such as trains and floral appliques are fun to read about and hard to wear. And skip any claim that a trend "sold out" or "took over" on the strength of a roundup: neither source reports sales.
